Who Invited Everyone to the Party? How to Actually Control What Your Smart Home Devices Know About Each Other
At some point you bought a smart bulb. Then a thermostat. Then a video doorbell because a neighbor got one and it seemed smart. Maybe you added a robot vacuum, a smart plug or two, and a speaker that listens for your voice. Each one felt like a reasonable, independent decision.
But here's the thing: those devices didn't stay independent. They've been talking to each other, sharing data with manufacturers, and quietly building a surprisingly detailed picture of how you live. And most people have zero idea it's happening.
This isn't a scare piece. It's a practical guide to figuring out what's actually going on in your smart home—and setting things up in a way that works for you instead of just... existing in the background doing whatever it wants.
Start With the Obvious Question: What Do You Even Have?
Before you can manage anything, you need a full picture. Most people genuinely don't know how many smart devices are on their home network.
Open your router's admin app—this is usually an app from your internet provider or your router brand (Eero, Orbi, Google Nest WiFi, etc.). Look for a section called "Connected Devices" or "Device List." You'll likely find a longer list than you expected. Smart TVs, game consoles, phones, and tablets will be on there too, but you're looking specifically for the IoT stuff: thermostats, cameras, speakers, locks, bulbs, sensors.
Write them down. Seriously, just a quick notes app list. You can't manage what you can't see.
The Hub Problem (Or: Why Everything Knows Everything)
Most smart home setups are organized around a hub or ecosystem—Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, or Samsung SmartThings are the big ones in the US. These hubs are incredibly useful because they let you control everything from one place. But that convenience comes with a tradeoff: when you link devices to a hub, they often share more than just on/off commands.
Your smart thermostat might tell Alexa when you're home. Your camera might trigger your smart lights. Your speaker might have access to your shopping history and your calendar. Each individual permission seemed harmless when you tapped "allow." Together, they add up to a pretty complete profile of your daily routine.
The fix isn't to blow everything up. It's to be intentional about which connections actually make your life easier versus which ones just... exist.
Audit Your App Permissions Like You Mean It
Open whatever app you use as your main smart home hub—Google Home, Alexa, Apple Home, whatever it is. Then do the following:
Check linked accounts. In Google Home, go to Settings > Works with Google. In the Alexa app, go to More > Skills & Games > Your Skills. In Apple Home, check individual device settings. You're looking for any linked service you don't recognize or actively use. Remove anything that doesn't ring a bell.
Review individual device permissions. Some devices ask for access to your location, contacts, or microphone beyond what they need to function. On your phone, go to Settings > Privacy (on iPhone) or Settings > Apps (on Android) and look up each smart home app individually. Revoke anything that seems excessive—a smart plug doesn't need your contacts.
Check routines and automations. In Alexa, go to More > Routines. In Google Home, tap Automations. These are often where the sneaky cross-device connections live. A routine that says "when I arrive home, turn on the lights and tell the thermostat" sounds innocent—but it also means your speaker knows your location and is sharing that with your thermostat's manufacturer. Decide if each routine is worth that trade.
Set Up a Guest Network for Your Smart Devices
This is one of the most effective things you can do, and almost nobody does it: put your smart home devices on a separate WiFi network from your phones, laptops, and tablets.
Most modern routers let you create a "guest network" or a secondary SSID. The idea is simple—if a smart device gets compromised or just gets nosy, it can't reach the devices where your actual sensitive data lives (your laptop, your phone, your NAS drive if you have one).
Log into your router admin panel (usually by typing 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 into a browser), find the guest network settings, and create a separate network. Name it something like "SmartHome" and connect all your IoT devices to that one. Keep your personal devices on the main network. This one step adds a meaningful layer of separation without requiring you to change how anything actually functions day-to-day.
Decide What Actually Needs to Talk to What
Not every connection between devices is worth keeping. Here's a quick framework:
Keep it if the automation genuinely saves you time or adds real value—like your thermostat adjusting when your alarm goes off in the morning.
Cut it if it's a "that's kind of cool" feature you set up once and never think about. Convenience you don't use isn't convenience—it's just extra exposure.
Question it if the connection involves your camera, microphone, or location data going somewhere beyond the device itself. Those deserve a closer look at the manufacturer's privacy policy before you just leave them running.
A Word on Manufacturer Data Sharing
Even if you manage every permission perfectly, the apps themselves are still collecting data and potentially sharing it with third parties. This is baked into most smart home ecosystems. You can check what a company collects by looking up their privacy policy, but a faster shortcut is checking the App Store or Google Play listing—both platforms now show a "Data Collected" or "Data Safety" section that summarizes what the app gathers.
If something you see there bothers you, your real options are to stop using the device, use it in a more limited way (like keeping it off the internet entirely, which some devices support), or accept the tradeoff consciously rather than by default.

Smart home devices are genuinely useful, and the goal here isn't to make you paranoid about your thermostat. It's to help you make actual choices instead of just letting things accumulate.
Doing a 30-minute audit—listing your devices, reviewing linked accounts, trimming unused routines, and setting up a guest network—puts you back in the driver's seat. After that, the same smart home you already have will work just as well. It'll just be doing it on your terms instead of everyone else's.
