You probably haven't thought about your printer since the last time it ran out of ink at the worst possible moment. Fair enough. But here's something worth knowing: that device humming on your desk or shelf is doing a lot more than waiting for print jobs. Modern connected printers — the kind with Wi-Fi, apps, and cloud printing features — are quietly gathering information about how you use them, and in some cases, sending that data back to the manufacturer on a regular basis.
This isn't a conspiracy theory. It's just how a lot of connected hardware works now. The good news is that you can do something about it.
What Your Printer Is Actually Tracking
Let's start with what's actually being collected, because it's more than most people expect.
Print job history is the big one. Many printers store a log of every document you've printed — date, time, file name, and sometimes even a thumbnail of the page. If you share a printer with family members or roommates, that log captures everyone's activity.
Network information is another category. Your printer connects to your home Wi-Fi, which means it knows your network name, and depending on the model, it may also log the IP addresses of devices that sent it print jobs. That's essentially a map of your home network.

Beyond ink sales, usage data helps companies understand which features people actually use, which informs future product development. It also feeds into advertising partnerships. If your printer reports that you regularly print coupons or tax documents, that behavioral signal has real market value.
None of this is necessarily malicious, but it's happening without most users giving it a second thought.
How to Find Out What Your Printer Has Stored
Before you change anything, it helps to see what's already there.
Check the printer's built-in menu. Most modern printers have a touchscreen or LCD panel. Look for a section called "Reports," "History," or "Job Log." This will show you what's been stored locally on the device.
Log into your printer's web interface. Every networked printer has a built-in web page you can access from your browser. Steps to Lock Down Your Printer's Privacy
