Every Website You Visit Is Taking Notes on How You Move — Here's How to Erase Them
You close a tab, clear your history, and feel pretty good about yourself. Clean slate, right? Not quite. Long before you ever clicked anything, the website was already watching — logging where your cursor hovered, how fast you scrolled, which paragraph made you slow down, and where your mouse drifted when you paused to think. That data didn't go anywhere when you closed the tab. It went somewhere else entirely.
This is cursor tracking, and it's a lot more common than most people realize. Let's break down what's actually being collected, who's collecting it, and — most importantly — how to stop it.
What Websites Actually Collect When You Browse
Most people think of tracking as cookies — little files that remember your login or show you ads for shoes you looked at once. Cookies are real, but they're almost quaint compared to what behavioral analytics tools are doing now.
Platforms like Hotjar, FullStory, and Microsoft Clarity are embedded on millions of websites. Their whole job is to record your session: where your mouse moves, where it lingers, how far you scroll before you give up, and what elements you almost clicked but didn't. Marketers call this a "heatmap." You can call it a replay of everything you did on that site, stored on a server you've never heard of.
On top of session recorders, there are tracking pixels — tiny, invisible images (often 1x1 pixel) embedded in web pages and emails. When your browser loads the pixel, it sends back your IP address, device info, browser type, and a timestamp. You never see it happen. It happens anyway.
None of this is necessarily illegal. Most of it is buried in privacy policies that nobody reads. But that doesn't mean you're stuck with it.
Step 1: Clear What's Already Stored in Your Browser
Before you change any settings, do a full wipe of what's already accumulated.
Chrome:
- Hit the three-dot menu in the top right → Settings
- Go to Privacy and security → Clear browsing data
- Set the time range to All time
- Check Cookies and other site data, Cached images and files, and Browsing history
- Click Clear data
Firefox:
- Open the menu (three lines) → Settings
- Go to Privacy & Security → scroll to Cookies and Site Data
- Click Clear Data, check both boxes, hit Clear
Safari (Mac):
- Go to Safari in the menu bar → Clear History
- Choose all history from the dropdown → Clear History
Edge:
- Three-dot menu → Settings → Privacy, search, and browser services
- Under Clear browsing data, click Choose what to clear
- Select everything and hit Clear now
Do this every couple of weeks. Think of it like cleaning out the junk drawer in your kitchen — it's not a one-time project, it's just something you do periodically.
Step 2: Block Tracking Pixels Before They Load
Clearing data removes what's already there. Blocking tracking pixels stops new data from being collected in the first place.
The easiest way to do this is with a browser extension. A few solid options:
- uBlock Origin (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) — free, open-source, and genuinely excellent. It blocks ads and trackers including most pixel-based tracking scripts.
- Privacy Badger from the Electronic Frontier Foundation — learns as you browse and automatically blocks invisible trackers.
- Ghostery — gives you a visual breakdown of what's being blocked on each page, which is satisfying in a slightly unsettling way.
Install one of these and let it run in the background. You'll likely notice pages load faster too, because all that tracking code takes time to execute.
Step 3: Turn On Your Browser's Built-In Privacy Settings
Every major browser has privacy controls that aren't enabled by default. Here's where to find them:
Chrome: Go to Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies → select Block third-party cookies. Also enable Enhanced protection under Safe Browsing.
Firefox: Firefox is actually the most privacy-friendly out of the box. Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → set Enhanced Tracking Protection to Strict. This blocks fingerprinters and cryptominers in addition to standard trackers.
Safari: Apple has built-in Intelligent Tracking Prevention that's on by default. Double-check it's active under Safari → Settings → Privacy → make sure Prevent cross-site tracking is checked.
Edge: Go to Settings → Privacy, search, and services → set tracking prevention to Strict.
Step 4: Deal With Email Tracking Pixels Separately
Email is its own tracking ecosystem. When a marketing email lands in your inbox and you open it, that embedded pixel fires and tells the sender exactly when you opened it, what device you used, and roughly where you are based on your IP address.
To stop this:
- Gmail: Go to Settings (gear icon) → See all settings → General → scroll to Images → select Ask before displaying external images. This prevents pixels from loading automatically.
- Apple Mail (iOS/Mac): Go to Settings → Mail → turn on Protect Mail Activity. Apple routes images through their proxy servers, masking your IP and behavior.
- Outlook: Go to File → Options → Trust Center → Trust Center Settings → Automatic Download → check Don't download pictures automatically.
Step 5: Make This a Regular Habit, Not a One-Off Fix
Here's the honest truth: digital tracking isn't something you defeat once and forget about. New tracking methods emerge constantly, and companies are pretty motivated to keep collecting this data because it's worth a lot of money.
A realistic maintenance schedule looks something like this:
- Every 2 weeks: Clear cookies and cached data in your browser
- Monthly: Check that your privacy extensions are up to date and still active
- Every few months: Revisit your browser's privacy settings — especially after a browser update, which can sometimes reset your preferences
- Annually: Do a full audit of which sites have stored permissions in your browser (you can find this under Site Settings in Chrome and Firefox)
None of this takes more than a few minutes once you know where to look. The goal isn't perfection — some tracking is unavoidable without going to pretty extreme lengths. The goal is making sure you're not handing over more than you realize just by moving your mouse around the internet.
